Aspire to Enterprise

The Third Sector makes a direct impact on the growth of Scotland's economy, the wellbeing of its citizens and the improvement of its public services and the Scottish Government is committed to developing the Third Sector in Scotland. The Aspire to Enterprise programme provides a range of business support services to social enterprises in Lowland Scotland, delivered by a consortium led by CEiS and Forth Sector.

To be eligible for 8 days tailored support, organisations must have a turnover of £60k-£800k, with the drive and potential to increase their trading. Aspire also provides a range of free seminars, available to all, which are designed to stimulate entrepreneurial activity for future development.

The proposed service is aimed at aspiring and emerging social enterprises that have moved beyond formation phase but have not yet developed to a stage/scale where they can effectively engage with Business Gateway services or the ‘client’ or ‘account’ managed elements of Scottish Enterprise.

This workshop will cover how participating in the Aspire programme can benefit your organisation. For example, through business health checks and support to further develop the trading capacity of your organisation. It will also give you an insight into the range of seminars they offer, including marketing and public sector tendering. Finally, the workshop will cover the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the role that social enterprises can play in maximising that legacy for communities in Scotland.

Mergers and Acquisitions: The How & The Why (& The Why Not)

This workshop will be led by Alan Kelly of MacRoberts LLP. In addition to being a Partner in the firm's Corporate Group, Alan is also a member of their Third Sector Group and has a close involvement with the social enterprise movement and the third sector. This workshop will aim to give an overview of how a merger or acquisition works in the Third Sector and explain what the parties need to do to ensure the perceived benefit of the transaction is derived. Since this will be an interactive workshop, with participants being asked to contribute to discussions, there will also be a chance to look at other issues and to share experiences and views.

Learn to Network Effectively

Have you been operating for 2 years or less? Are you a new social enterprise or aspiring social entrepreneur?

If YES then Firstport and the Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition have created a special opportunity to enable you to attend S2S (Scotland’s largest social enterprise gathering) at reduced rate and with an additional workshop.

If you’re new to networking and events then we have designed a special session that will run for an hour before you head into S2S where the opportunity to pitch your idea. The session will run at Link Housing (right next to the Corn Exchange) where we will also take on registration for S2S attendance.

• An Introduction to the Youth Social Enterprise Network
• An Interactive opportunity to feed in with your thoughts and questions

This is an excellent opportunity to either take part or watch pitch and is a great way to practice your pitch and learn from each other.
